She Heard Her Mom in the Wall — Part 5: The First Swing

They let David watch from the observation room, on a monitor with the sound turned up, and Vaught stood beside him with her arms folded and never once looked away.

On the screen, his wife sat down across the table from Corinne Merrow.

Hospital robe. IV bruises on her arms. Back straight as a fence post.

Corinne looked — and this was the thing David's mind kept sliding off of — relieved.

She leaned forward like a woman meeting a friend for lunch.

"Em. Look at you. They're taking good care of you — I told them, I said she bruises if you look at her wrong, she needs the—"

"Stop."

Emma's voice was still sanded down to almost nothing, but it stopped her.

"You don't get to do the voice with me. The wife voice. The friend voice. I've had seven months of listening to your voices through a wall, Corinne. I know every one of them. I want the real one."

Something flickered across Corinne's face.

Then, slowly, like a coat coming off, the warmth went away, and what was underneath was calm and reasonable and worse than any snarl.

"The real one," Corinne said.

"Fine. Here's the real one. I never hurt you. Not once. Ask your doctors — no marks, nothing broken. I brought you real food. I fed you every single day, Emma. When you had that fever in April, I sat outside that door until three in the morning listening to you breathe. Nobody has ever taken care of you the way I took care of you."

"You put me in a wall."

"You put me out in the cold twenty years ago."

And there it was.

The reasonable voice cracked, just once, right down the middle.

"Room 114. Best year of my whole life. You know what I had before you? Nothing. Nobody. Then one semester I had a sister — your clothes fit me, your handwriting fit me, your life fit me — and you went to that dean and cut me out of it like I was a tumor. Twenty years, Emma. Twenty years you got to live my life. I only took back seven months."
