The Stepmother Who Told Him His Dinner Was in the Trash — Part 3: What Elena Left in the Tin Box

Marcus took his son to a diner eleven miles away, because the lawyer's voice was still in the kitchen and he could not stand to be in the same room as that phone.

He ordered pancakes Ethan didn't eat and coffee he didn't drink.

For a while they just sat.

Then Marcus said, "Bud, I need to ask you about the garage."

Ethan's shoulders came up around his ears.

"You're not in trouble. You have never been in trouble. Not once, not one single time, and not now."

The boy turned his fork over.

"She asks me where the box is," he said.

Marcus went very still.

"What box?"

"Mom's box."

Marcus had not thought about the tin box in over a year.

It had lived on the top shelf of Elena's closet for as long as he had known her — a rectangular cookie tin, dented at one corner, with a faded picture of a Scottish castle on the lid.

After the funeral he had put it in a bag of her things and then he had not been able to look at any of it, and eventually the bag had gone into the crawlspace.

Except that it hadn't, apparently.

"Where is it now?" he asked.

Ethan looked at his father for a long moment, measuring something.

Then he said, "Can we go get it?"

They drove to the elementary school and parked.

The boy led him around the back of the building to the equipment shed, where a plastic bin of soccer cones sat under a shelf, and from behind the bin he pulled out a school backpack that Marcus had reported lost in September and had grounded him for losing.

The tin box was inside, wrapped in a school sweatshirt.
